These Hollywood A-listers certainly made a style statement at the Met Gala on Monday – but for all the wrong reasons.

The first Monday of May is here – which means the Met Gala is finally upon us. The annual star-studded ball, which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, has become one of the most talked about and coveted events of the year.

Branded by some as the biggest night in fashion, dozens of A-list stars attended the glittering soiree, which was hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, 72.

And while some seriously slayed the red carpet with their stunning looks, others completely missed the mark – including Katy Perry, Emily Ratajkowski, Cara Delevingne, Camila Cabello, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kylie Jenner, Billie Eilish, Gemma Chan, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Lala Anthony.

From bizarre structural frocks to tacky all-leather looks, there wasn’t a shortage of sartorial nightmares on the Met Gala red carpet.

Ratajkowski, 30, topped the Met Gala’s worst-dressed list in a nearly-naked carnival look. Her rainbow beaded top left little to imagination, while her ruffled, colorful skirt ensured all attention was on her.

‘I feel very lucky to be wearing this look,’ Ratajkowski said of her Versace number, which was previously worn by model Yasmeen Ghauri in 1992 during a runway show.

Jenner, 24, on the other hand, wore a wedding dress to the event, which she paired with a backwards baseball cap and a vail.

As for Cabello, 25, she wore a white dress with unflattering, floral ruffles on it – which appeared to be inspired by the cereal Fruit Loops. The awkward gown, which contained a long train, left her midriff on full display.

Fashion fails: These Hollywood A-listers certainly made a style statement at the Met Gala on Monday – but for all the wrong reasons. Emily Ratajkowski, 30, topped the Met Gala’s worst-dressed list this year, in a nearly-naked carnival look

Bridezilla! Kylie Jenner wore a wedding dress to the event, which she paired with a backwards baseball cap and a vail

The reality star’s long, flowing, white gown – which was covered waist down in ruffles – was more fitting for a wedding than the Met Gala

Katy Perry, 37, wore a black and white, very skimpy dress to the ball; the tiny one-shoulder number left her long legs on full display

The singer changed up her look slightly after leaving her hotel (left) – taking off her scarf before she hit the red carpet (right)

Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan, 39, wore a black and silver ensemble which contained an awkwardly-shaped box-like dress

Cara Delevingne, 29, was shirtless on the red carpet. She covered her upper half with body paint, using golden nipple pasties to cover her assets

The model first entered the event with her top on, but took the red jacket off minutes later

Yikes: Camila Cabello, 25, wore a white dress with unflattering, floral ruffles on it – which appeared to be inspired by the cereal Fruit Loops. The gown, which contained a long train, left her midriff on full display

The Havana songstress kept her long brown locks pulled up in a bun. She completed the awkward ensemble with a floral hair accessory and long dangling earrings

‘I’m super happy with what I’m wearing,’ the singer said during E! News Met Gala pre-show. ‘[My dress] is sustainable, which I love.

‘I love how [Prabal Gurung] weaves in his values, and feminism, and body positivity. I’m super proud of who I’m here with.’

Perry, 37, also suffered a fashion mishap when she wore a very skimpy, black and white dress to the ball.

The Roar songstress, who recently welcomed her first child with Orlando Bloom – a daughter named Daisy Dove – is no stranger to controversial Met Gala dresses.

Back in 2019, she dressed up like a chandelier and wore a gown that came complete with fake candles, before switching into a dress that was shaped like an actual hamburger for the afterparty.

Delevingne, 29, left many people stunned when she showed up shirtless to the red carpet. She covered her upper half with gold body paint, while golden nipple pasties covered her assets.

If Jessica Parker’s black and white, ghastly gingham gown wasn’t eye-catching enough, the 57-year-old Sex and the City alum paired the look with a huge headpiece – which certainly ensured that all eyes were on her.

According to Vogue, the actress’ gown was a tribute to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley – who made history as the first Black female fashion designer in the White House.

‘The veil is inspired by the opulence and decadence of the Gilded Age,’ said designer Phillip Treacy, while discussing Jessica Parker’s dramatic hat.

‘Sarah Jessica is always inspiring to design for. She has a love of hats and fashion. and has never been afraid to embrace whatever theme she is presented with.’

Many people took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the unsuccessful looks, with one writing, ‘Emily Ratajkowski looks like she’s going to the carnival of Rio.’

Another added: ‘Did Emily Ratajkowski mistake the Met Gala for the carnival?’

‘Emily Ratajkowski is giving decoration on a carnival float,’ said someone else.

‘Kylie babe, this isn’t a wedding,’ a different user tweeted.

‘Please tell me Kylie is joking with that wedding gown,’ read another tweet.

Another person joked, ‘Kylie looks like she had a baseball game at 6 and her wedding at 7.’

‘Katy’s dress is just not it,’ wrote someone else.

A different social media user said, ‘Somebody kick Camila Cabello out of the Met Gala. What is that dress?’

‘Camila Cabello needs to fire whoever told her to wear that dress,’ read another tweet. ‘It’s so unfortunate I won’t post it on my timeline.’

Each year, on the first Monday of May, Hollywood’s biggest celebrities stomp the red carpet in lavish outfits, many of which are compulsively talked about by the public.

And while some stars put their best fashion foot forward as they turned out for the high-profile fundraising gala – which was co-chaired by Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda – others showed up in seriously questionable outfits.

The theme for this year’s event, which marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is ‘Gilded Glamour’ – a nod to New York City’s Gilded Age.

This year’s soirée sees the gala return to its first Monday in May date for the first time since 2019; it was canceled in 2020 amid the COVID pandemic and delayed to September last year over safety fears.
